My sister is determined on the New Beetle because of a mix between ‘How bad can it be?’ and #YOLO..
But thanks anyways for the wise words, I made sure to read each and every one out loud to her and my family.
Tomorrow we are going to look at a New Beetle 2.0 Highline. She is serious.
This might turn out to be the biggest ‘I told you so’.

Tell me how that goes, hah. Diesel or gas? The Beetles weren’t exactly renowned for being good cars at that time period, they were very hard to work on.

Your sister is not very smart.

I dont like how they look, but I test drove one, once, for about 5 miles, and I found it... acceptable. roomy inside, acceptable comfortable, kept up with traffic.
I’m assuming your vehement objections to it go beyond my cursory review?

Gas, wich actually worries me more.

I like how they look, I like the inside too, but it’s just not a very good car in reliability and there are so many cars that are better that you can get for the money, I’m worried she is wasting it on this car.

That part doesn’t bother me as much really, but the fact that it’s a Beetle is a little more no trusty.
The 2.Slow was a very economical engine though, I’d imagine that it would produce similar figures to that of a diesel engine. They were slow as hell though, but reliable to an extent. As long as it isn’t the 1.8T she should be somewhat fine ish enough.

buy her a socket set as a first car gift, and perhaps an unreliable first car will bring her long lasting mechanical experiences. lemonade from lemons?

A former co-worker commuted from a rural town about 45 minutes away in a New Bettle every day. He wayed near 400 pounds and looked lilke the car had been built around him. He actually liked it quite a bit, mostly for mileage though.

I DD a 2000 New Beetle with the 2.slow engine and a 5MT. They are a bitch to work on, but they are basically a repacked golf that is a bit safer, a lot “cuter”, and not quite as convenient/useful. I don’t hate mine, but I don’t really love it either. It’s a car, it gets me from place to place.
It’s fun to drive in a slow car fast kind of way with a forgiving manual gearbox and a very light clutch. But working on them is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone else.

Both of the 2.0 golfs I’ve had were virtually trouble free drive train wise. Both went way passed 200k and were running when we parted ways. 5 speed is a must, that engine with an auto is a bad driving experience.

they really aren’t that bad.

Mini Coopers are “cute” too. You can’t talk her into one of those?

Why not just get a used 3-door Golf?

She already gets to drive one regularly from someone, we even took it skiing last year. It is a brand new Cooper with all options.

My best friend had one. I have a deeply rooted paranoia about old VW’s because of this car. The dash is big enough for a laptop for long car rides or a pizza. About the only fond memory I have of it. The Turbo with the low-profile tires is scary as fuck in every weather condition except perfect and is in a constant state of hydroplane in the rain.
The engine fell out twice and nothing ever worked right before or after that. Was sold for parts even though it was still driveable.
